Habitat conservation

Our precious planet is being pushed to the limit. Over half of all coral reefs have already been lost, deforestation has wiped enough trees to cover the whole of the United States, and 97% of British wildflower meadows have disappeared. Habitat loss is now one of the biggest threats to life everywhere, contributing to the loss of 85% of all species that are in decline.

We are acting globally to drive forward a journey of recovery for the planet, through working with communities to create a healthier future for life everywhere. Whether through re-establishing native British oyster habitats, planting over 1 million mangrove trees in the Philippines or protecting 440,000 hectares of forest in South Sumatra. When we join together everything is possible.

Causes of habitat loss

Climate change and agriculture are two of the biggest causes of habitat loss globally.

Almost two fifths of the Earth's surface is now used for agriculture. Inefficient farming practices are a massive cause of habitat loss, with two-thirds of this agricultural land used for grazing life-stock. We are working everywhere from Dja Faunal Reserve in Cameroon to Greater one-horned rhino grasslands in Nepal, equipping communities with the resources to farm sustainably. Helping people and wildlife live better together.

The climate crisis is causing coral bleaching, droughts and wildfires which are destroying already fragile habitats. By taking action to protect habitats, we can tackle the biodiversity and climate crisis' together. We have restored over 1,260 football pitches of mangrove trees, which can store up to four times as much carbon than other tropical forests, whilst also providing crucial shade from the heat and uv rays of the sun. Our nature-based solutions are making a difference to better protect wildlife, people, and the planet.
