As children head back to school, most parents have been busy ticking off uniforms, pencil cases and homework planners while teachers are finalising seating plans, lesson plans, and classroom supplies. But as the new school year starts, there’s one thing missing from the school day: time in nature.
Why does it matter? Because the evidence is overwhelming: time outdoors improves children’s resilience, focus, immunity and sense of calm. When kids crunch leaves, watch clouds drift by or hunt for worms, they’re not just having fun – they’re investing in their own wellbeing.
Yet access to nature isn’t equal. Government research shows that only half of young people spend regular time in gardens or green spaces outside of school – and children in the most deprived areas are the least likely to have that opportunity.
We’re calling on the government
That’s why we’re calling on the government to make access to nature a right for every schoolchild and is asking every adult with their own fond memories of learning in nature to sign a petition to secure the same benefits for today’s children.
This responsibility shouldn't rest solely on parents or teachers; it requires government support to provide dedicated funding for teacher training, equipment, and access to green spaces.
In the meantime, parents can make a difference
Here’s your back-to-school checklist to improve your child’s physical and mental health and support ZSL’s call to incorporate nature into everyday school life.
What can you do?
Pack for the outdoors
Slip wellies, waterproofs or a spare jumper into your child’s school bag. Having the right gear makes it easier for schools – and your family – to embrace outdoor learning in all weathers.
Celebrate outdoor learning
Share successes with parents and the wider community to show how nature boosts wellbeing and learning.
Champion nature at school
Encourage teachers and governors to join our campaign. We know they’re extremely busy, but you can also ask how your school is using green spaces or creating wild corners in the playground. Parent voices can help keep outdoor learning on the agenda.
Spread the word
Encourage friends, colleagues, and family to sign the petition too.
Show support online
Share ZSL’s campaign on social media to keep the issue on the government’s agenda.
Share your story
Post your own childhood memories of learning in nature, from pond-dipping to climbing trees, and tag #NatureIsARight
The impact reaches far beyond playtime. The government estimates £2.1bn a year could be saved in health costs if everyone had access to green space. Just as important, the children exploring nature today will grow into the adults making tomorrow’s environmental decisions.
So, as you tick off pencil cases and PE kits, make space on your checklist for something just as important: the great outdoors.
ZSL’s campaign aims to make sure children's access to nature doesn’t end when the school holidays do. We’re calling on the government to make access to nature a right for every schoolchild and are asking every adult with their own fond memories of learning in nature to sign a petition to secure the same benefits for today’s children.
