Our commitment to sustainable research

Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice

At ZSL, sustainability is at the heart of all our activities.

Across our two conservation zoos, our Institute of Zoology, and our conservation programmes across the world, sustainability is integral to all areas of ZSL. We are therefore pleased to commit our support for the priority areas outlined in the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice.

The concordat aims to ensure research and innovation continues to play a critical part in understanding how our planet is changing, while helping the sector to act responsibly to protect and promote our environment and at ZSL, we agree with the aims and priority areas included in the concordat.

By supporting the aims and priority areas of the concordat, we recognise that embedding sustainability across ZSL is crucial. In our Research England-funded Institute of Zoology, we are dedicated to ensuring our world-leading research is carried out in an environmentally sustainable way, to tackle the climate crisis and prevent further biodiversity loss. We are also committed to continuous improvement to find alternative and more climate-conscious solutions and ways of working.

Working in alignment with ZSL’s Environmental Sustainability Plan, the Institute of Zoology’s Carbon Management Committee actively seeks ways of reducing our environmental impact whilst maintaining our ability to produce impactful science. The committee has developed a Sustainability Action Plan to guide this effort, aligning the plan to the Environmental Sustainability Concordat, ensuring that we follow best practices in sustainability in the academic sector.

We are committed to producing world-leading science addressing global challenges in the field of conservation science, and are proud to sign the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice to do this in an environmentally responsible way.

Yours sincerely

Kathryn England, CEO, ZSL and Professor Johan T. du Toit, Director of Science, ZSL
