At ZSL, we’re working to secure a future for wildlife the world over – including wildlife on our doorstep! So, this week we’re starting our Around the World journey close to home, to take a look at some of the UK conservation work you are helping to support, and the species you are helping bounce back, through your fantastic fundraising efforts.
It’s sometimes easy to overlook what’s right in front of us. From field crickets to seals, all species in the UK have intrinsic value, and they are all interconnected – as we are. Many once-common UK species are declining due to huge pressures on wildlife including urban development and the intensification of farming. While there are challenges ahead for UK wildlife, thanks to the work of ZSL, our Zoos and conservation partners around the country, we are starting to see some much-loved icons come back from the brink.
ZSL has been part of a huge range of projects to protect British wildlife. Whether we’re supporting healthy reintroductions of rare species through our Disease Risk Analysis and Health Surveillance for Interventions team, or monitoring health threats to garden animals through our Garden Wildlife Health project, our scientists, conservationists and vets have been shedding new light on UK species, supporting vital efforts to bring back lost nature, and engaging the general public to get involved with local conservation.
