The waters surrounding Wales are home to 27 elasmobranch species, including the Critically Endangered angelshark, but we know very little about their ecological and cultural significance.

Dani is a PhD student with Bangor University and ZSL funded by CDT SuMMeR. She is working to further understand the socio-ecological importance of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) in a changing climate, specifically in Wales. Using transdisciplinary approaches spanning social science, ecology, and oceanography, her work focuses on North Wales in collaboration with Project SIARC and the Ocean Predator Lab (OPL) at ZSL. The goal of Dani’s PhD is to understand how sharks and rays benefit the ecology of Wales as well as its culture, plus uncover how they and the benefits they provide will be impacted by the effects of climate change using climate modelling.

Dani is particularly interested in the intersection between scientific and humanities research as well as using science communication, writing, and education for meaningful conservation outcomes and inclusion in science.
