This year, ZSL turned 200 years old. It’s a remarkable achievement, and our focus has been on two things: celebrating ZSL’s extraordinary history, and ensuring we’re set to meet the challenges of the future.
The fundamental challenge we face is the restoration of wildlife in the UK and around the world, and in this Review you’ll read about some of the ways we’re meeting that challenge; from the restoration of Polynesian tree snails and the return of cheetahs to Zambia’s Luangwa Valley, to the launch of ZooTown at London Zoo.
You’ll also read case studies celebrating notable moments from our history, such as the creation of the Institute of Zoology, to mark our bicentenary.
Our success as a science-driven conservation charity is underpinned by our two world-class conservation Zoos, where we safeguard over 194 threatened species and subspecies, and welcomed 2.1 million visitors – including almost 150,000 students on educational visits. Our success is also underpinned by our people and, to mark this special year, we have named the staff who were part of ZSL on our anniversary.
To our generous supporters: your partnership and commitment have saved species on the brink and inspired future conservationists. If you are thinking about how you can protect wildlife into the future, please consider leaving a gift to ZSL in your Will. Every legacy, no matter the size, will protect wildlife for future generations.
