Current Research

I am currently working on the Sampled Red List Index (SRLI), which is derived from the IUCN Red List Index and aids the measurement of general trends in the extinction risk of large numbers of taxonomic groups, which are broadly representative of global biodiversity.

This approach enables us to assess global patterns in extinction risk and threats to biodiversity. The SRLI also allows us to compare extinction risk of lesser-known taxa to that faced by well-studied taxa such as birds and mammals. Some of the questions I am hoping to address are: which taxa are most threatened; where can we find areas of high threat levels to resident biodiversity; what are the major threats which biodiversity is facing (both globally and on a more local scale).

Previous Research

My previous work focussed on wildlife management issues in the UK, with a particular emphasis on wildlife disease. I am particularly interested in estimating rates of direct and indirect interactions between wildlife hosts and livestock in the field, which in turn determine the rate for inter-specific disease transmission. Since many pathogens are able to infect multiple host species, complex reservoir host systems can comprise more than one species. As a result, the potential for a disease to invade and persist within a host community greatly depends on the degree of those inter-specific interactions which can lead to disease transmission. In reality, however, true rates of both intra- and inter-specific interaction are often not known, due to the difficulty of studying contacts under field conditions.

I have previously employed contact data logger collars to remotely monitor of direct contacts between badgers and cattle on pasture. This is of particular interest with regard to the spread of bovine tuberculosis between the two species, as the badger is believed to be the main wildlife host for the disease in the UK. I have also been involved in work on the potential role that wild deer could play as reservoir hosts for disease in British livestock. In those cases were wildlife acts as a host of zoonotic disease, many of these issues are also of considerable importance to human health.
