Did you know that ‘red panda’ means ‘fire-coloured cat’ in latin? Its striking red fur is thought to help it blend in with the reddish-brown moss that grows on the branches of the trees in which it lives.
Sadly, red pandas are declining throughout their range due to deforestation, farming and hunting. As a result, they are recognised as an Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species. ZSL is working to conserve animals like the red panda through the ZSL EDGE of Existence Programme.
