Rainforest Strata

The rainforest is divided in to layers called strata. The canopy is the top layer of vegetation in the forest. A thick layer made up of the tops of tall trees, it acts as a ceiling to the rest of the wildlife there.

The tallest trees in the rainforest burst through the canopy and umbrella over the rest of the vegetation. These are called the emergents. Over half the animals in the forest live in these layers, including the two-toed sloth, pygmy marmoset and aracari on show in the biome.
