ZSL Whipsnade Zoo has picked up the Family Traveller Award for the Best UK Day Out for Families.
The award, which saw ZSL Whipsnade Zoo fend off tough competition from visitor attractions such as the Eden Project, Natural History Museum, National Trust, Hampton Court Palace and Peppa Pig World, was presented at a London awards ceremony this October.
In order to win, the Zoo had to pass through multiple stages of the awards process, beginning with nomination.
The shortlist was then selected by the Family Traveller team, before going to a public vote and then finally selection by an expert panel of judges, which included broadcaster Mariella Frostrup; BBC travel documentary maker Simon Reeve; travel editor of The Times Jane Knight; and travel & lifestyle director of Elle, Sue Ward Davies.
The Zoo was nominated for the award by a member of the general public for its spacious enclosures, vast range of animals, ‘In with the Lemurs’ walkthrough, Jumbo Express, play areas and more.
In addition to winning the Best UK Day Out for Families award, ZSL was also nominated for the Best Conservation Charity for Families award.
ZSL Communications Director Rich Storton said: "This is another great accolade for ZSL Whipsnade Zoo which continues to go from strength to strength, increasing in popularity as we launch fantastic new events and exhibits for our visitors.
"This award, for the Best UK Day Out for Families, is a real achievement for ZSL Whipsnade Zoo and we’re very proud to have won it.
"ZSL is an international animal conservation charity working in 50 countries around the world and here at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo we’re always working to share our passion for wildlife and to inspire others of all ages to support animal conservation.
"Families are incredibly important to us and by giving inspirational and educational days out they can really enjoy spending time with one another.
"Many thanks to those who voted for the Zoo and to the team of dedicated staff and volunteers who make ZSL Whipsnade Zoo such an amazing place."
