It's a boy! Baby giraffe born at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo has welcomed a leggy newcomer - a baby male giraffe.

The youngster was born at 7am on 30 September to proud first-time mum Ijuma and dad Uno. Zookeepers put together a shortlist of their favourite names for the new arrival and it was put to a public vote. Fans of the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Facebook page chose 'Jengo' as the baby giraffe's name.

Jengo took his first wobbly steps just a few hours after being born, a nerve-wracking experience for onlooking zookeepers. He is now very confident on his long legs and can often be seen galloping around the giraffe barn.

Mum Ijuma has been showing good maternal instincts and the other giraffes, including Dad Uno, are very curious about the new arrival, peering over the fence to get a better look.

Both mum and baby are doing well and visitors can see him in the giraffe barn or exploring outside!
