Elephants get ready for a Big Night Out

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is preparing for its annual Big Night Out and its herd of elephants got in on the action by having their very own special pedicure.

Keepers treated the Zoo’s ten Asian elephants - including Donna, Kaylee and eight-month-old calf Max - to a pedicure before they take part in the special evening event.

Head Elephant Keeper Lee Sambrook says: “Giving our elephants a pedicure isn’t just a way of indulging them in the run up to the event; they are treated to regular foot care sessions to keep their feet in tip top shape and prevent any of their nails from becoming overgrown or misshapen.

“The elephants always seem to enjoy Big Night Out, especially their mile-long walk around the Zoo. Elephants usually stay up until the early hours of the morning anyway and visitors always love seeing them take their evening stroll.”
