Preparing for your Trip

  1. Pre-Visit Recce

Once you have booked your trip you are entitled to a free preliminary visit to the zoo (one teacher per class). We strongly recommend this so you can familiarise yourself with the zoo and the location of toilets, lunch spots and workshops (if booked) and plan your route. We are also able to offer a pre-visit consultation with you over the phone or via video call, If you have not already booked these and would like to do so, please email learning@zsl.org quoting your 5-digit Order Number.

  1. Risk Assessments and other Health & Safety Information

Safety is our main priority and so we have prepared a range of guides to aid you in your risk assessment planning, including a COVID-Safety guide. We will update these if there are any subsequent changes in DfE guidance.

Face masks are still needed in some areas

Please note all visitors aged over 11 (unless exempt) will still need to wear facemasks in our walkthrough exhibits to keep our animals as safe as possible (as visitors share the same space as our animals in these areas). Please bring enough facemasks with you for all adults and any students aged over 11 years old. We are also encouraging visitors to voluntarily continue wearing masks when inside our retail and catering spaces, and indoor exhibits.

  1. Plan your Route

We’ve introduced three routes around London Zoo:

  • Pink includes: giraffes, zebras, African hunting dogs, Rainforest Life, pygmy hippos, lemurs, otters, and meerkats.
  • Blue is the shortest route and includes western lowland gorillas, tigers, the Reptile House and Komodo dragon.
  • Orange includes: lions, penguins, butterflies, squirrel monkeys and Tiny Giants.

All three routes finish in the Zoo's central courtyard and can be taken in any order. If you are visiting within normal school hours, we recommend splitting into smaller groups (depending on your adult supervision ratios) and picking two routes for each group, stopping for lunch halfway. We no longer have a bookable lunch space but areas to eat are marked on the map.

Do you have a workshop booked? Check you workshop time and location and plan your route and lunch stops around this. These details will be in your booking confirmation email.

The Clore Rainforest Classroom, Huxley Lecture Theatre and the Education Centre meeting points are on the pink route

The Activity Den and the Lions Classroom meeting points are on the Orange Route

No Coach parking at the Zoo

ZSL London Zoo’s car park is currently reduced in size while essential Thames Water and HS2 works are taking place. Therefore, no coach parking is available. Coaches will be able to drop off & pick up in the car park but will then need to park elsewhere. Please ensure your coach company is aware.
