The lion, the witch and the lamp post…

ZSL London Zoo’s Asiatic lion pride came face-to-face with the iconic lamp post from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe this Thursday (7 November) - to celebrate the launch of the ultimate family day out this Christmas.

Zookeepers transformed the literary landmark into a giant scratching post to mark a new partnership with The Bridge Theatre: combining a festive trip to see the lions at ZSL London Zoo with watching the most famous big cat in literature come to life on stage at The Bridge Theatre in south London - in their new production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Asiatic lions Bhanu, Heidi, Indi and Rubi woke up to find the 7ft tall scratching post, made of cast iron and hessian rope, on Thursday 7 November - ahead of the exciting production’s first night on Saturday 9 November.

ZSL’s Chief Operating Officer Kathryn England said: “With ZSL London Zoo celebrating the magic of Christmas with a range of festive activities, and this much-celebrated production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe coming to London, it’s the perfect time to offer families the merriest day out in the city.

“Literature-loving animal fans are in for the ultimate magical experience – visit the real Aslan during the day at ZSL London Zoo before watching the classic story come to life on stage at night!”

The lamp post will remain in the pride’s Land of the Lions home for the Christmas period, bringing a little bit of Narnian magic to the Zoo throughout December – where, unlike in the mythical land, every day will be Christmas.

Head to ZSL London Zoo this Christmas to enjoy a packed schedule of festive fun events, before watching the childhood classic come to life at The Bridge Theatre
