ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s Asian short-clawed otters Carol and Ernie have been getting to grips with their own carved pumpkin ahead of Halloween, as the UK’s biggest Zoo puts on a ghoulish week of family activities this October half-term.
Zookeepers filled a pumpkin with one of their favourite treats – fish – to help the miniature monsters get into the spooky spirit ahead of the Halloween weekend.
“You might think that otters are cute and playful, but don’t be deceived by their ‘butter-wouldn’t-melt’ looks,” says Matthew Webb, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s Animal Manager. “Otters are notorious predators with highly dexterous paws that allow them to find their dinner in murky water or at the bottom of the riverbed - or like today, out of their specially carved pumpkins.”
For families on the hunt for monsters this half term, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is inviting you to take part in its Wizard Wolfgang’s Tricky Trail, a self-guided walk following magical clues across a 600-acre nature haven. Visitors can enjoy their day on foot or by car, visiting the Zoo’s animals along the way.
