In my role as a research assistant at ZSL I focus on reef biodiversity and connectivity in the Chagos Archipelago, a remote archipelago in the middle of the Indian Ocean. I use population genetics, together with other laboratory techniques, to investigate how coral populations are connected within the Chagos Archipelago through their larvae dispersal and how this influences their recovery from major disturbances such as global mass coral bleaching events. My research forms part of an exciting project, funded by The Bertarelli Programme in Marine Science, taking an interdisciplinary approach to investigating reef biodiversity, connectivity and productivity with the main goal of contributing to our understanding of the conservation value of Chagos Archipelago’s reefs.
I particularly enjoy studying the inner workings of genetics in marine organisms. My work contributes to global efforts to disentangle recovery patterns and to potentially identify networks of coral connectivity which may be hotspots for more intensive protection in the future. This aids in the conservation of reef ecosystems, which are a particularly threatened environment.
