ZSL London Zoo welcomed London’s glitterati on Wednesday, 20 May for our second annual fundraising gala, Safari in the City, raising vital funds for our Asiatic lions campaign.
The Indian themed evening, hosted by comedian and ZSL supporter Bill Bailey, raised an incredible amount of more than £230k towards our work for wildlife.
Philanthropists eager to help ZSL protect the last 500 Asiatic lions surviving in a small patch of the Gir Forest, India, snapped up tables and donated generously. While supporting our conservation work in the Gir Forest, funds raised will also help us create Land of the Lions, our new Asiatic lion exhibit and breeding centre in the heart of ZSL London Zoo due to open in 2016.
On the evening guests, including socialite Chelsy Davy and actor Phil Daniel journeyed into an Asian-inspired wonderland. They were whisked around the Zoo on brightly coloured rickshaws and explored exhibits including Tiger Territory, before heading to the unique Safari tent for a fabulous authentic Indian feast, created by celebrity chef Vivek Singh.
We still have a way to go to reach our ambitious £5.7m target. You can get involved by taking part in one of our challenge events, making a donation towards our work in the wild, or making a lasting mark on the new exhibit by dedicating a tile in our Majestic Mosaic.
