Junior Zoo Academy – FAQs

Please read through the frequently asked questions below before applying.

How much does it cost per student?

Cost per student: £175

This needs to be paid in full within two weeks of us confirming your application has been successful.


What's included in the cost of the course?

ZSL Junior Zoo Academy is a two-day course which including games, challenges, trails and some keeper experiences

Supported by the education staff, participants will also create a scrapbook of what they’ve done as well as a certificate at the end of the course

Free car park pass for adult/guardian as well as discount in the café and shop.

What are the age restrictions?

Places for each course are limited to 10 students aged 8-10 years old. Participants must be at least 8 years when they start the course.


How do I book a place on the Junior Zoo Academy?

We are now taking bookings for 2021. Bookings can be made online or over the phone by calling 0304 225 1826


Will the practical tasks be suitable for 8-10 year olds?

We have carefully selected practical tasks that are enjoyable yet appropriate for a group of this age. We risk assess all tasks and training is given to all participants.


How many students take part on the course?

Each ZSL Junior Zoo Academy course is designed for 10 children. The whole course is supervised by at least two members of the education team to ensure an enjoyable, yet safe experience for all participants. Staff are DBS checked.


What is expected from the students?

We expect exemplary behaviour from all participants, towards each other, zoo visitors, the education and keeping staff as well as our animals!

Failure to behave in the expected manner could lead to removal from the course. ZSL reserves the right to remove a participant from the course for:

  • Persistent lateness
  • Unsociable behaviour
  • Endangering themselves and/or others
  • Compromising animal welfare


What happens if I am ill during the course?

If, for any reason you cannot attend, please phone the Education department before 9.30am on the day of the course and leave a message. Please state your name, contact telephone number and the reason you are unable to attend. Please call 0344 225 1826. 


When is payment required?

Online payment is required to book a place on the course. You will be sent all of the relevant consent forms to complete once your payment is received. Once these forms have been returned you will receive a confirmation letter.


Are lunch and refreshments included?

No, you will need to bring your own packed lunch and drinks for each day of the course. We will not be visiting the zoo café at lunch times, so you will not be able to buy food during the course hours. Lunch and break times will be supervised at all times.


What clothing and equipment will I need to bring with me?

This course does involve a lot of walking throughout the day and we will be outside in all weathers. Therefore, please make sure the clothes and shoes you wear are comfortable and sensible. Clothes may also get messy so please dress appropriately.

Please make sure you bring the following items to every session. If you are unsure please call 0344 225 1826 before the course starts:

  • Sensible, comfortable footwear – e.g. sturdy shoes or wellington boots
  • Light waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof trousers (optional)
  • Dress in layers so you can remove as appropriate when working
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • Can I bring a camera with me?

If you would like to, you may bring your own camera so you can record what we do. However, the zoo takes no responsibility for loss or damage of personal clothing and equipment including cameras. Members of the zoo staff will also take pictures to record the activities so do not feel like you have to provide your own camera.


Will I be able to provide feedback on the course?

To aid the improvement of ZSL Junior Zoo Academy, we will ask you and your parent/guardian to complete an evaluation form at the end of the course.
