Is the workshop suitable for me?

If you love small wildlife and want to push your wildlife photography onwards while creating some great images, this workshop will be perfect for you. You’ll get close to all kinds of exotic species out of their enclosures under the expert supervision of a trained zoo keeper.

Do I need to be an advanced photographer?

No! If you already know your shutter speeds from your apertures, this workshop will allow you to get on with shooting some fascinating species in a unique environment, with Dave on hand to provide compositional hints and tips, help with lighting and anything else you need.

If you’re just starting out, Dave can take you through how to manage exposure and get started with manual modes and how to get the most out of autofocus. Small group sizes, a maximum of six, means you’re guaranteed plenty of one-on-one help and advice.

Want to get the basics mastered before you come? Why not try our Beginners Workshop first to get to grips with the basics and boost your confidence?

What to expect on the day

On arrival you will be welcomed by professional photographer Dave Stevenson who will provide several workshops on how to capture this style of photography.

Our zoo keepers will then take you behind the scenes at our famous Reptile House and bring out a variety of reptiles, allowing you to practise what you have learnt and take good close-up portraits of each animal.

After lunch in our Terrace Restaurant you will get a chance to meet our incredible Galapagos tortoises, followed by another practical photography session in our BUGS house. Again a zoo keeper will be on hand to showcase a number of invertebrates from our insect collection for you to photograph using your new skills.

By the end of the day we hope that you will leave with a new set of skills and a great selection of macro images.

What will I need?

The Macro Photography Workshop requires participants to bring a digital SLR or mirrorless camera that allows you to change lenses.

Do I need a macro lens?

Yes you will definitely need a macro lens or at the very least you should bring a telephoto lens with a macro switch on it. This equipment is essential to get the most out of our subjects and setting. If you’re unsure whether your lens will do the trick, Dave is always available on email at workshops@davestevenson.co.uk

Where should I get a macro lens?

There are lots of options when it comes to macro lenses but if you want to try before you buy, and save 20%, we’re really pleased to be partnering with top lens hire firm Lenses For Hire. Head there and type “macro” in the search box and you’ll be able to rent a high-end macro lens for our workshop. Lenses For Hire takes care of shipping and insurance, and if you use promo code ZSLPHOTO2018 at the checkout you will get a 20% saving on your rental.

Do I need a tripod?

Definitely not! These workshops take place back of house in relatively confined spaces and six tripods will get in the way. Unfortunately that means trying certain macro techniques, such as focus stacking, won’t be possible, but it does mean you’ll have the freedom to move around and find interesting compositions without tripping over other people’s equipment.

Do I need a flash?

You’re free to bring supplementary lighting, whether that’s an on-camera flash, wireless system or ring flash, although there are some species whose welfare needs dictate strobes not be used. We place animal welfare above everything else on these workshops so although you’re welcome to bring a flash, you may not be able to use it all the time. Please don’t bring lightstands. Dave lights these workshops with two bright, high-end, 5400K (daylight) LED panels so you’ll be able to shoot steady shutter speeds and stop your aperture down a bit to manage depth of field while keeping your ISO reasonable. If all that’s Greek to you, come along to a workshop and all will be explained!
