Digital Outreach - Frequently Asked Questions

Because ZSL in your Classroom is very different from our in-zoo education sessions, we have put together some Frequently Asked Questions to help you prepare for your session. Please contact us on schools@zsl.org if you have any other questions about sessions or set up.

 

How long will the session last?

  • Classifying Animals is a 30 minute session
  • Animal Lifecycles is a 45 minute session
  • Evolution & Adaptations is a 45 minute session
  • Feeding & Foodchains is a 45 minute session

Please note, all session times are approximate and we will endeavour to deliver in the described time frame.
All sessions include an open Q&A at the end – where your students can pose their questions to us


What equipment do I need to run the session?

  • A Skype account (that is accessible in your classroom)
  • An internet connection
  • Computer with microphone and speakers
  • A webcam
  • Interactive White Board (or another way to display the Skype screen)


What resources do I need to run the session?

We will email you a set up guide after you have booked the session which will include all resources that you need to print. All details of what to expect during the call are included in the Set up Guide that will be sent to you on booking your digital outreach session.


I don’t yet have a Skype account – what can I do?

You must have a Skype account to participate in a digital outreach session. If you do not use this in your classroom already, you can find out more about setting up a Skype account at www.skype.com  

Please check with your IT support that Skype is functional at your school as it can sometimes be blocked (it is classed as ‘social media’). If you have any issues setting up an account or running Skype, please go to support.skype.com/en/ for further support.

 

What if we cannot use Skype in our school?

We use Skype as the platform for delivering these sessions. Some LEAs do block Skype use in schools as it is classed as social media. We therefore strongly recommend that you check with your IT support that Skype is functional at your school, and if it is not that you can get access to it for the session. If you cannot access Skype then we cannot run the session.

 

Why do I need to book a Test Call?

A Test Call will be booked at the same time as you book your digital outreach session. This free test call is an essential part of your booking.  It enables us to check that Skype is not blocked at your school, that the connection is strong enough to run the session and gives us an opportunity to talk through the session with the class teacher.  This must be booked at least one week before your scheduled digital outreach session.

 

What will happen on the day of the session?

Upon booking the session you will be given a Teacher Set up Guide which includes a checklist to help you prepare for your session. Please ensure you are logged on to Skype and appear as ‘online’ just before the designated time of your session. We will then call you at the designated time. Please make sure that all your students are ready and that you have the resources ready to distribute when prompted by the Discovery & Learning Officer.
