Heath and grassland

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo - SSSI

Though they are often fairly exposed environments, heathland and grasslands can be very rich habitats. The UK's heathlands and chalk grasslands are a shrinking haven for myriad birds and insects, while grassland habitats worldwide are suffering. Changes in farming practices, scrub burning, poaching and drainage have put heavy pressure on grassland and heath habitats in many areas across the globe.

ZSL is working to repair and prevent some of this damage, through breeding programmes, monitoring work, developing conservation capacity and raising awareness of the great value these ecosystems have to the animals and human communities alike.
