Elephants are #WorthMoreAlive

by ZSL on

On world elephant day we are supporting a fresh drive to protect these enormous veterans of the animal kingdom. #WorthMoreAlive is a new campaign, launched by United for Wildlife, aiming to bring a global army against the ivory trading that is threatening African elephants with extinction.

African elephants are #worthmorealive is the key message behind their new campaign

United for Wildlife, set up byThe Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, is calling for an urgent and united action to give these much loved giants a future. ZSL is one of the leading conservation organisations that are part of this important collaboration.

We are at a critical point in the battle to save Africa’s elephants, the poaching of elephants continues at a horrific pace, with an estimated 30,000 African elephants lost each year on average. The total population of African elephants is believed to have fallen from over 500,000 to less than 400,000 in just a few years.

Central Africa has been hardest hit and has lost some 65% of its elephants in the period between 2002 and 2013. If we don’t act now some populations of this iconic animal could be extinct from the wild by 2025.

Closing domestic ivory markets is one key step to end the poaching of elephants and ivory trafficking, securing the long term future for elephants. Alongside increased efforts to protect elephants in the wild, ending the trafficking of ivory by reducing its demand and closing domestic ivory markets can help make the difference.

Sales of ivory, including within legal domestic markets, increases the risk to elephants and the local communities that rely on them and can provide cover for illegal trade, reinforce the high value of ivory and ultimately threaten the survival of many populations of elephants.

In the lead up to two important conservation events in 2016, United for Wildlife are focusing on providing you with a voice to show your support for the closure of domestic ivory markets around the world.

We need your help to spread the message that elephants are #WorthMoreAlive to try and make these votes and the summit a success for elephants. Show your love for elephants and support for their conservation by creating your own elephant image and sharing it with the hashtag #WorthMoreAlive. Because elephants are definitely worth more alive!
