Sustainable Palm Oil Platform – Project Coordinator

Sustainable Palm Oil Platform – Project Coordinator

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

ZSL is seeking an individual to coordinate our online Sustainable Palm Oil Platform (http://www.sustainablepalmoil.org/). Launched in 2012 at the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) annual meeting, the Sustainable Palm Oil Platform (SPP) is an online best practice resource centre for stakeholders in the palm oil supply chain and is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive and useful information sources available on the subject.

ZSL is looking for an enthusiastic and creative individual to take the platform in to its next phase.  A key new component of the SPP will be the Transparency Toolkit.  Recently announced at RSPO Europe, this Toolkit will initially track the performance of 25 oil palm growers against a framework of best practice indicators.  It incorporates a live newsfeed from Thomson Reuters and a Google-based mapping tool with content to include oil palm companies’ concession site boundaries, fire and forest alerts.  The Toolkit is intended to provide greater guidance for users of the SPP, in particular for the Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) process undertaken by investors, financers and manufacturers.

ZSL now needs to revise the content of the SPP and prepare for the Toolkit’s launch in November.  We are looking for an individual to coordinate this work and to ensure that the SPP reaches its target audience.  Following the launch, the impact of the SPP needs to be maximised and monitored, and a clear strategy needs to be in place for the platform in 2015.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual with a wildlife conservation background to become a part of ZSL’s business and biodiversity team and help deliver ZSL’s global palm oil strategy.  Based in London, the post-holder will sit within ZSL’s Conservation Programmes department and should be familiar with biodiversity and conservation issues, preferably with an understanding of the palm oil industry.  The post-holder should have a high level of written English and be a good communicator and a good researcher, preferably with some technical experience of working with online media.  The position is for six months working full-time, Monday-Friday 9-5.30pm.

To apply please complete and attach separately the ZSL Application form and Equality of Opportunity Monitoring form  and send with your cv to hr@zsl.org by the closing date of: 7th August 2014
