Salary: c. £37,000 p.a.

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is a charity committed to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. ZSL operates two of the UK’s most popular visitor attractions, ZSL London Zoo and its sister zoo, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

Communicating to visitors at both ZSL London and Whipsnade Zoos is crucial to ZSL’s mission. As Manager of Design and Interpretation you will ensure that our varied audiences are engaged and inspired by our Living Collection, understand more about our conservation work and crucially enjoy their visit to our Zoos.

The post is responsible for managing the exhibit interpretation and audience engagement provision at both sites through graphic design, interpretation development and exhibit planning. It also manages ZSL’s design studio – our in-house graphic design resource that supports the interpretation developers, along with the design needs of ZSL as a whole. They will understand the importance of brand, have an eye for good, consistent design and be able to manage the workload between in-house and freelance designers.

You should provide dynamic leadership and nurture the creativity of the team members. You will have advanced and flexible communication skills; you might be deciding how to interpret complex conservation ideas to a child one minute and presenting your strategy for site wide projects to senior management the next. The role also involves extensive negotiations with a wide array of stakeholders both externally and internally, an open-minded and diplomatic approach is often called for.

The applicant will be educated to at least degree level, preferably in a relevant subject. The applicant will have relevant experience in successfully managing teams, designers and substantial design/exhibition projects.
