Children's Art Workshops: Poster Design

29 Aug 2014 10:00 - 15:00

One of the most important roles of a zoo is to teach people about animals.  In this art workshop we will be looking at how to make information about the animals as interesting and eye-catching as possible.  We will be looking at examples of signs around the zoo to help us with ideas.  This class will also include a studio-based poster making session where children will pick an animal fact to illustrate and create exciting posters using monoprinting and collage.

Entry Level: 7-11yrs

Venue: ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

Who is the course aimed at?  The course is aimed at children aged 7-11 years who love animals and art.  The children will have the opportunity to think about how to use their artistic skill to get people interested in learning about the animals.  Each ticket includes a place for an accompanying adult who can join the creative fun.

Content:  The workshop will involve a mixture of studio work and drawing activities in the zoo.  Guided by a children’s illustrator, the children will be drawing and discovering facts about animals in the zoo that can be turned into exciting posters.  They will also be looking at some examples of signs around the zoo.  You posters will not go up in the zoo grounds, but we would like to exhibit photos of them in our online gallery.

Objectives:

  • Encourage children to think about how they can illustrate different animal facts.
  • Encourage children to look at the educational signs used at the zoo and evaluate how affective they are and why.
  • Encourage children to use drawing as a way of gathering information.
  • Create zoo posters for the children can take home with them.

Materials:

  • Please bring aprons / old shirts (clothes may get a bit messy) – all art materials will be supplied.
