About this course: Drawing from observation is the key building block that all artistic pursuits stem from.  This workshop would focus on developing drawing skills and giving a better idea of how to collect visual information about animals in the Zoo.  The workshop also includes studio-based monoprinting to allow these ideas to develop further and create individual prints to take home.

Who is the course aimed at?  The course is aimed at children aged 4-11 years who love animals and want to improve their drawing skills.  The children will have the opportunity to draw animals around the zoo as well as learning a new way to make simple printed images.  Each ticket includes a place for an accompanying adult who can join the creative fun.

Content:  The course will involve a mixture of studio work and drawing activities in the zoo.  Guided by a children’s illustrator, children will have an opportunity to look at other artists’ work as well as creating some of their own.  For this class the emphasis will be on developing drawing skills by looking at the animals and drawing what you see, rather than what you think the animal should look like.

Objectives:

  • Encourage children to explore mark making and line drawing
  • Emphasize drawing what they see, not what they think they should see.
  • Encourage children to use drawing as a way of gathering information.
  • Create monoprints from the information gathered in the Zoo.

Materials:

  • Please bring aprons / old shirts (clothes may get a bit messy) – all art materials will be supplied.
