ZSL Whipsnade Zoo – count me in!

Monday 12 January 2009

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is kicking off the New Year with its annual stocktake – counting all its animals to make sure the animal tally is correct.

All keepers will take part in this huge exercise, taking a head count of more than 200 different species at Whipsnade.

This year’s count includes four cheeky chaps – the Meerkats, John, Paul, George and Ringo – who came up to the zoo to their brand new home from ZSL London Zoo last year. They are keen to “stand up and be counted” and will be on their usual sentry duty in their home adjacent to the Lions of the Serengeti exhibit.

Elsewhere, two other new additions are heavyweights who cannot be missed - Jabari and Shaka our two new white rhino calves born last year have added to our flourishing African herd.

During the stocktake every single animal is counted – right down to the ants in the Discovery Centre who are added up in their colonies rather than individually!

Despite a harsh start to the year with some very wintry weather, the zoo is very much open to visitors who can come and visit all the animals, including their favourites, seven days a week.

The year ahead at Whipsnade is one to mark in the diary for a visit for all budding explorers. Our new adventure for 2008 will centre around The Big Five – featuring five of Whipsnade’s best-loved giants of the animal kingdom. More details coming soon!
