Zoo Academy aims to inspire animal carers of the future
Friday 20 September 2013
Animal courses for would-be vets and keepers are back at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo for 2014, giving a practical taste of the realities behind such sought-after jobs.
ZSL Zoo Academy offers exciting animal-based courses designed for 15-17 year olds who are keen on a career as a vet, vet nurse, zoo keeper or who are wishing to complete other animal related studies. Run over eight days, the zoo-based courses include study sessions on working with different exotic species and over 20 hours practical experience.
Supported by the education and keeping staff, students will complete an evidence portfolio of their work; receive a certificate and reference statement confirming their completion of the course.
In addition, each week the group will prepare diets for a variety of different species within the zoo. The types of animals students can expect to be involved with range from small mammals and invertebrates to big cats and white rhinos.
On the final day of the course, family and friends of the students are invited to attend ZSL Zoo Academy Graduation. The course lasts eight days (not weekends or Bank Holidays) at a cost of £575 per student.
All new Junior Zoo Academy for 8-11 year olds
With the success of Zoo Academy for older students, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo are excited to launch Junior Zoo Academy. Aimed at children aged 8-11, this is a great programme for those who are interested in animals and want to learn more about them in the zoo!
Junior Zoo Academy is a two-day course that includes making enrichment for the animals at the zoo, animal feeding and some animal handling along with other zoo themed activities.
