Take a walk on the wild side - the beasts are back
Tuesday 29 June 2010
Fascinating and unique species have moved into ZSL Whipsnade Zoo to claim back land where they once roamed.
Wild Wild Whipsnade is our brand new exhibit featuring diverse, dramatic animals such as lynx, wolverine, wild boar and moose living in a new forest-style environment.
Joining the four new species will be the engaging European brown bears and wolves.
Together these animals take visitors on a journey back to old England when these creatures were once the lords of the land.
Visitors can learn about their origins and their fight for survival in today’s world. In this International Year of Biodiversity, these intriguing creatures will help showcase the efforts that ZSL Whipsnade Zoo and other conservation groups are making to look after these animals for future generations.
All the species will also be part of breeding groups and Whipsnade is pleased to be part of European endangered species breeding programmes for the lynx and wolverine, joining wider efforts to conserve and raise awareness of these treasured animals.
Malcolm Fitzpatrick, senior curator of mammals at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) said: “We are thrilled to have these beasts back in the wilds of the zoo.
"They are exciting for visitors and offer a great opportunity for us to breed these endangered animals.”
He added: “The wolverine is a feisty character and I’m sure they will delight visitors, and we certainly hope our wild cat will have the lynx effect.”
