They say you should take things with a pinch of salt, but our marine sealions were very happy when 20 tonnes of salt were delivered to their pool
Donated by British Salt, the salt is essential to maintain the right conditions in the sealion pool.
You will find wild sealions off the coast of California and they are now a protected species. Sealions come ashore to breed and their young are unable to swim for around two weeks after they are born. Whipsnade's sealions have produced several young over the years - and by the age of two years they can weigh up to 10 stone!
"We are delighted that British Salt are continuing their support for ZSL with another donation of salt for the sealions," says Whipsnade sealion keeper, Les Radford.
"British Salt is very happy to provide salt for the sealions' pool, and in so doing to support ZSL," says Russell Cradduck, Sales and Marketing Director at British Salt. "Our employees will have a special interest in the sealions when they visit the Park knowing they have contributed to their welfare."
