Giraffes lick their way into Halloween!

Wednesday 24 October 2007

Keepers are giving their reticulated giraffes a frightfully fun piece of action to celebrate the ghostly season of Halloween. Six pumpkins, carved with the traditional Jack O Lantern faces have been provided as a special spooky treat.

But instead of carving out the middle of the pumpkin, keepers have left the fleshy fruit inside so that the giraffes can lick through the scary faces to get at the yummy taste they like. Their long tongues are just right for poking around in the pumpkins and the activity provides a great enrichment exercise for them.

Giraffes enjoy some fruit each day to complement their daily diet of browse, Lucerne hay and specially designed meal pellets.
