Animal facts

No tortoises have teeth. Instead, they use their sharp edged jaws to tear up food. The shell protects their soft bodies from predators and because of this protection they do not usually show aggression or attempt to flee when disturbed.

Eygpt, Israel and Libya

Habitat

Sandy desert

What they eat

Vegetarian feeding mainly on leaves and stems.

IUCN status

The Egyptian tortoise is under serious threat due to habitat loss and illegal collection for the pet trade.
