Animal facts
The Arabian oryx became extinct in the wild in 1972, mainly due to hunting. A few were taken into captivity and bred in zoos - this species was one of the earliest successes of captive breeding. Several hundred have since been returned to the desert in Saudi Arabia and Oman.
