Scientific Meeting - Alternative Reproductive Strategies in Animal Societies

Dates: 11 Dec 2007

Times: 6:00 pm - 7:45 pm

This meeting will explore the variation in reproductive behaviour across the taxonomic spectrum.

Animal societies have evolved many ingenious ways to pass their genes on to the next generation, aside from simple male-female pair-bonding. Understanding the evolution and maintenance of these strategies provides fascinating insights into animal behaviour as well as information on mating systems that is crucial for species conservation.

Alternative reproductive strategies can result in intriguing levels of organisation, such as individuals waiting their turn in a queue to become a breeder, or clever methods of avoiding detection by a host in order to parasitise another individual’s nesting resources.

This meeting explores the variation in reproductive behaviour across the taxonomic spectrum, using examples from insects, birds and mammals to illustrate the diversity in strategies of gene propagation found in the animal kingdom.

Organised by Dr Seirian Sumner and Dr Jakob Bro-Jørgensen, Institute of Zoology, ZSL

Speakers
Professor Jeremy Field – Sussex University
Dr Rebecca Kilner – University of Cambridge
Dr Loeske Kruuk – University of Edinburgh
Dr David S. Richardson – University of East Anglia

The talks are free and open to the public (no advance booking or registration required). Talks will begin at 6.00pm; doors open at 5.15pm and seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
