Scientific Meeting - The management of Asian elephant health and reproduction
Dates: 10 Jun 2008
Times: 6:00 pm - 7:45 pm
The Asian elephant is an endangered species that has had an important role in the history of Asian civilizations.
Today Asian elephants are still important at ceremonial events but they are also kept in camps for tourists, representing a significant form of agriculture. As well as being of economic importance, these elephants in camps may prove vital in the maintenance of vulnerable wild Asian elephant populations.
However, little is known about the health, breeding and genetics of the domesticated elephants, such knowledge will be crucial for maintaining elephant health and wellbeing.
This meeting will outline some of the current issues in the management of Asian elephant health and reproduction and speakers will include experts involved in the EU-Asia Link grant funded Elephas maximus 2007-2010 project from Thailand and The Netherlands.
Organised by: Professor Bill Holt and Dr Rhiannon Lloyd, Institute of Zoology, ZSL; and Professor Robert Paling, University of Utrecht, The Netherlands
