Nepal Conservation in Crisis - seminar
Dates: 24 Nov 2009
Times: 10:30 am - 3:00 pm
Government of Nepal, Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation and National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) are jointly observing 2009 as "Nepal Nature Conservation Year".

The objective is to share the experiences and achievements recorded in the area of natural resources conservation through partnership and collaboration.
The Zoological Society of London, which has been a long term partner in Nepal is hosting this meeting on behalf of the Government of Nepal.
Places are also available for an evening dinner: Fragile Nepal - Exclusive Dinner Event
Nepal boasts diverse geography from the high Himalayas, the third pole and water tower for the Indian subcontinent, to the floodplains of the Terai, with remarkable biodiversity to match but remains the poorest country in Asia.
Extinction threats loom as pressures on habitats and poaching increase, a result of direct impacts of human population growth, exacerbated by climate change and a period of social and political crisis in Nepal.
The Greater One Horned Rhino, tiger and snow leopard are good examples of endangered species from the grassland, forest and mountain habitats.
Their fate is dependent on protective action, creating acceptable conditions for coexistence with man, mitigation of climate change impacts, securing healthy habitat and sufficient capacity and resource to implement necessary conservation action in Nepal.
The seminar will discuss the current challenges to conservation in Nepal and recommend longer term sustainable and effective solutions.
Key Speakers:
Chaired by Minister of Forests and Soil Conservation and Director of National Parks Nepal
• Professor Surya Subedi, Expert in International Environmental Law, University of Leeds;
• Dr Shant Jnawali - NTNC Rhino and Terai Grassland expert;
• Dr Siddhartha Bajracharya - NTNC Executive Office Projects and Programmes;
