About this course:
The ZSL Ceramics Course is a unique and enjoyable approach to learning the primary skills of ceramics. Everyone will be involved with hands-on, step by step practical project work to create your own unique finished fired pieces that explore different methods of working the clay. The course will cover a range of making and surface decorating techniques to build an understanding of how to plan, make, decorate and glaze clay work creatively and successfully. You could even get the chance to exhibit your finished piece at the Zoo!
ZSL is the oldest scientific zoological site in the world and boasts an amazing array of animals, landscapes, architecture and history. As part of this course you will explore these unique subjects and choose one of them as the theme to form the basis of your piece. We will also encourage anyone that has recollections of London Zoo (perhaps from childhood) to re-visit those memories and reveal them in your work. You will have access to archives within our magnificent Library.
The course also includes practical demonstrations, examples of work and discussions.
Design research work outside the course is optional.
Outcome of this Course:
The ZSL Ceramics Course introduces the basic hand-building techniques of working with clay. You will have hands on experience of making your own finished ceramic pieces to take home. You will build an understanding of the unending possibilities that clay offers as a material and the process required to achieve finished work, as well as learning about the natural world.
