One, Zoo, Three…

ZSL London Zoo’s keepers got a mammoth start to the New Year – counting every animal in the annual stocktake.

Home to more than 800 unique species, zookeepers have been taking stock of every invertebrate, bird, fish, mammal, reptile, and amphibian for the 2014 stocktake.

2013 saw the arrival of Kumbuka , a handsome silverback western lowland gorilla, who joined Gorilla Kingdom’s three females, Mjukuu, Effie and Zaire as part of the European breeding programme for endangered species.

Three spiny headed tree lizards were a cause for celebration in the Reptile House, when they were the first ever to be born in a UK zoo, and keepers in the BUGS exhibit face the slow task of counting hundreds of new Partula snails , which have been moved to London ahead of their release into the wild next year.

The compulsory count is required as part of ZSL London Zoo’s zoo license and the results are logged into the International Species Information System (ISIS), where the data is shared with zoos around the world and used to manage the international breeding programmes for endangered animals.
