The zoo is giving some of its animals an opportunity to experience a traditional beach holiday over the long weekend, with surfboards, hammocks and beach balls to play with.
Otters are well known for their playful and curious nature, and love of floating objects, so they will be given a surfboard to frolic on.
The squirrel monkeys, who love clambering about, are also in for a treat as the zoo provides them with miniature hammocks to climb in and swing from.
The bearded pigs, well known for charging about their enclosure, will be given some beach balls for boisterous summer games. The balls will also be given to the otters and meerkats, which are naturally curious. The meerkats at ZSL London Zoo have just had a litter of four kits, which are now just six weeks old.
Keepers expect the animals to go wild with excitement and Tracey Lee, one of the team leaders of the mammal keepers, said:
βThe treats are all forms of enrichment β ways of mentally and physically stimulating the animals β each of which is perfectly suited to the nature of the animal receiving it.
Visitors this weekend will be able to able to watch the animals enjoying their treats and listen to keepers talk about their amazing animals.β
