Wednesday 4 January 2012
There’s p-p-p-plenty to be counted at ZSL London Zoo this January, with zookeepers undertaking one of the biggest tasks of the year – the annual stocktake.

After dusting off their abacuses and digging out their tally charts, keepers at ZSL London Zoo have had the tall task of individually counting every animal. Home to more than 16,000 animals, keepers took note of every mammal, bird, fish, reptile, amphibian and invertebrate at the Zoo.
The opening of 2011's brand new exhibit Penguin Beach has boosted the Zoo’s penguin population, and the exciting birth of two endangered Asian lion cubs all need to be tallied up.
The compulsory count is required as part of ZSL London Zoo’s zoo license, and every creature, great or small, needs to be totted up.
