And they call it hippo love...
Pygmy hippos might be better known for wallowing in mud than melting hearts, but that is exactly what life is like for one of ZSL London Zoo’s happiest couples.
Eleven years ago Thug and Nicola, affectionately known as Nicky Noo by her keepers, first set eyes on each other and straight away the pair fell head over heels in love.
During the winter the pair enjoy nothing more than spending their days lazing in their hot tubs inside Zoo World. They can often be seen frolicking in the water together and blowing bubbles at each other.
When the weather warms up they pack up and trundle to their outdoor summer enclosure, where they enjoy rolling around and having fun in their mud wallow.
Thug is always keen to impress and loves showing off to his girlfriend. His favourite trick is to swim under a large tropical leaf floating in the pool and emerge wearing it on his head like a wig.
However, like all successful relationships, the pair enjoy having their own space at times, especially Nicky Noo.
She allows Thug to eat breakfast with her every morning, but she prefers some privacy when tucking into lunch and supper – mainly in case Thug tries to steal her food!
However, despite his name Thug is a gentle soul, and most of the time he is happy for Nicky Noo to get her own way. Perhaps that’s the secret to their success!
