Giants of the Galapagos

As part of our Darwin 200 celebrations, ZSL London Zoo opened 'Giants of the Galapagos', home to our three magnificent Galapagos tortoises - Dirk, Dolores and Dolly.
Extraordinary tortoises
Galapagos tortoises are the largest tortoises in the world. They can live for over 150 years and they carry around huge, bony shells that they can hide inside if they feel threatened.
Sadly, despite their size they are gentle giants, and over the last few hundred years they haven't been too good at fending off predators.

Here's some cool facts on the species that captured Darwin's imagination.

Conservation
Our new Giants of the Galapagos exhibit is part of ZSL’s ongoing integrated conservation programme. We are delighted that we have been able to raise a further £25,000 for conservation in this region. ZSL is currently discussing with its Ecuadorian partners on how best to use this money to help build capacity and a legacy within Ecuador.

Love or Lust? Only time will shell
ZSL London Zoo's Giants of the Galapagos exhibit introduces its star attraction - an energetic pensioner called Dirk.
He might be going on for around 70-years-old, but one of ZSL London Zoo’s newest animals has not one, but two females living in his boudoir. Read more about the tortoises.
