EcoZoo - ZSL Whipsnade Zoo
As well as our extensive conservation field programmes and endangered species breeding work, ZSL is also working hard to improve the way we manage our Zoo sites to reduce negative environmental impacts and enhance ecological and social benefits.
At ZSL Whipsnade Zoo we are:
Operating our first renewable energy project which heats the indoor pools for our One-horned rhino group using solar panels and an air heat exchange system.
| ||
Improving our energy and fuel efficiency through new condensing boilers, insulation of pipes and using electric vehicles on site.
| ||
Improving the condition of our spectacular natural areas such as our Site of Special Scientific Interest chalk grassland and ancient woodlands.
| ||
Demonstrating green ideas to our visitors through signs around the site with tips on how to protect the environment and conserve local wildlife.
Participating in the Green Tourism Business Award Scheme to help encourage all departments to get involved and make ‘green’ improvements.
Working towards the ISO14001 international standard for the way we manage our environmental resources.
Promoting Fairtrade, organic, local and seasonal products in our Zoo shops and cafes. We use free range eggs and chickens and sustainably sourced fish in our cafés. |
