Malayan tapir
Tapirus indicus
Animal facts
Tapirs have changed little over 35 million years. They use their short flexible trunk as a snorkel when swimming. The dramatic colouring helps to break up the outline of the body to provide camouflage in the shady forests. The young are striped and look different from their mother.
The Malayan tapir is an EDGE species. Find out about the EDGE conservation programme for Malayan tapir here
