Meet some of the most popular animals that you can expect to encounter on your visit to ZSL London Zoo

Find out facts about the animals, including where they live, what they eat and whether they are endangered in the wild (their IUCN status). Much of the work of ZSL is the research and help these species in their own habitats.

Painted Dog

Mammals - African hunting dog

African hunting dogs are social, communally hunting carnivores, which live in small cohesive packs.

Penguins at London Zoo

Birds - Blackfooted penguin

Penguins spend nine months at sea and return to land only to breed and moult. This species is threatened by oil pollution and reduction of food supply due to overfishing.

Moon jellyfish

Invertebrates - Moon jellyfish

Adult moon jellyfish are easily recognisable by the four horseshoe-shaped reproductive organs which are visible through the top of the bell.

Reptiles, amphibians and fish - Komodo dragon

Komodo dragons have saliva laced with deadly bacteria. Having ambushed their prey, they often wait for the animal to die from the infections caused by the wounds.
