Shaheed Macgregor Veterinary Microbiologist
Having screened more than 6,500 samples last year, Shaheed is at the forefront of ZSL’s efforts to safeguard both animals and visitors from zoonoses, diseases which can be transmitted from animals to humans.
Shaheed obtained an MSc in Medical Microbiology in 1995 from Westminster University and previously worked for the Central Veterinary Laboratory.
He has worked as a Microbiologist for the Zoological Society of London since 1991 and screened over 6500 samples from both ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo last year alone. By isolating dangerous pathogens he enables the correct antibiotics to be prescribed for clinical treatment and facilitates post mortems. In addition to screening all ZSL animals he also conducts microbiology screening for English Nature, RSPB and Marine Mammal projects.
Shaheed is a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science and was awarded Chartered Scientist status in 2005.
