Amazonian Adventures

Paku fishWhy is it so important for us to conserve the fish in the Amazon?

Conserving Amazonian fish is very important, the Amazon is a huge river and many areas of it have not been surveyed! It’s important that we do as much work out there as possible because we don’t know what were losing until we actually know what we’ve got!

Which are the most well known Amazonian fish in the aquarium?

The most well known Amazonian fish we’ve got here are probably the red bellied piranhas, and also the stingrays, pacu fish and catfish!

What were the main concerns for you when you’re working in and around the Amazon river?

Our main concerns were looking after ourselves, and what we eat! We were so deep into the Amazon the nearest road was 3 days away! So it was very important we had the right amount of food, drinking water, and medical supplies!
When we are actually in the river though, we have to be very aware as there are a lot of deadly animals and fish in the river such as cat fish, and electric eels! So you have to take certain precautions and be very careful!

Where can people see Amazonian fish in the aquarium?

People can see the red bellied piranhas in hall 1, we’ve got the pacu fish and cat fish at the end of hall 2, and we’ve also got our stingray in hall 3!!
