Welcome to The Institute of Zoology’s data portal. We are developing a number of sites that use new web technologies to disseminate biodiversity data to the scientific, conservation and public communities.
iBats
iBats is a partnership between the Institute of Zoology and the Bat Conservation Trust, and aims to generate data on changes in bat species distributions and abundances across the world to evaluate the impact of global change on biodiversity (e.g climate change, land use change). The website provides
- An information portal for project partners for distribution for best practice protocols and training materials with different layers of access depending on the identity of the user;
- A data store for the collected acoustic transects with upload and download facilities and online tools for data analysis.

Regional Red Lists
This website will provide a rapidly growing centralised point for Regional Red Lists globally. Visitors to the website can find out more about Regional Red Lists, access relevant documents and links, and search a downloadable library of Regional Red Lists produced around the globe.

Human Emerging Infectious Disease Database
This is collaborative project with The Consortium for Conservation Medicine and CIESIN, Columbia University in the US to determine the major anthropogenic drivers of emerging infectious diseases and to develop predictive models of current and future risk of disease emergence based on recent and projected trends in anthropogenic drivers.
We have built up spatial, temporal and biological information on 355 pathogens emerging into human populations since 1940 (in 391 separate emergence events). We are planning further developing this dataset and developing the database into an interactive web portal for our collaborators and for communicating our results to a wider audience. EDGE of Existence Programme
The EDGE of Existence Programme aims to conserve the world's most Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species by implementing the research and conservation actions needed to secure their future. The website provides
- A forum to ask questions, discuss EDGE research and conservation programmes, comment on topical issues, and catch up on the latest news from the field;
- A searchable database to provide information on EDGE species; and
- Facilitates a new way of raising money and awareness for a group of species that have on the whole been overlooked by conservation to date.

Wildlife Picture Index
The Wildlife Picture Index is a collaborative project developing a site-based biodiversity indicator using camera trap sampling to track changes in biodiversity. Camera traps are used to evaluate change in key vertebrate species population trends in conservation and wilderness areas, from local to global scales.
An online centralised relational database will be developed to process camera trap data and coordinate trend analyses and information exchange across the monitoring network. The database will contain linked tables to allow simple information upload and provide flexibility in data manipulation and retrieval (please check back later for further developments).
PanTHERIA
PanTHERIA is an online database containing information on the ecology, distribution, life history, size and phylogenetic information of different individuals, populations and species of extinct and extant mammals. The website which is currently under development will provide online tools for uploading, downloading and analyses of data and communication between project partners (please check back later for further developments).
