Research Interests:

My PhD focuses on the genetic structure of the giant otter both at the species scale and the fine scale patterns of relatedness between and within social groups.

The giant otter population is currently recovering from intense overharvesting of pelts in the last century, but at present it numbers as few as 5000 individuals and remains endangered.

Previously there existed two subspecies of giant otter, and while the division has since been dropped, there has been no new taxonomic evidence brought to light. Part of this study will be a look at the broad-scale structure across the entire species’ range using both mitochondrial DNA control region sequencing and microsatellites. It will investigate whether there have been any historical barriers of gene flow and any justification for dividing the species into management units. This could provide a useful basis for the prioritisation of conservation areas and reference for restocking programmes.

Giant otter society is believed to consist of an alpha pair, with subadult young remaining to help raise the next litter. However there is evidence that there could be a more complex social system than meets the eye. Behavioural studies of groups in several field sites in South America, combined with microsatellite analysis should determine the fine scale pattern of relatedness within populations, and provide insight into the social structure of these groups.
