Sonajas (meaning bells)– are a woven basket rattle from Northern Peru. This soft palm straw is coloured with many different natural dyes and woven by hand into a basket shape by local artisans.

Different colour combinations in the weave make these little instruments eye catching
and their characteristic sound comes from a bell hidden inside the basket. Traditionally used in local dances they add to the spectacle of colourful swirling dance by young girls in native costume.
